Brazil's Environment Minister Expresses Optimism for New Rainforest Fund to Reach $10 Billion Milestone
Brazil's Environment Minister, João Paulo Capobianco, has voiced strong optimism that the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF) will achieve its initial funding target of $10 billion this year. The TFFF, launched by Brazil at COP30 in the Amazon and co-led by Norway, is designed as an innovative alternative to traditional grant-based forest finance. It aims to raise $125 billion in public and private capital, invest these funds in bond markets, and then use the annual returns to compensate countries that successfully preserve their forests. As of now, the TFFF has secured $7.3 billion from governments, with a remaining gap of $2.7 billion to reach its initial goal. Capobianco highlighted that this initiative is a global effort, not solely Brazilian, and is not at risk from Brazil's upcoming elections. The fund's financial architecture and initial investments are expected to take time, with payments to developing countries unlikely before 2028.
