Volatile Summer Weather Expected in Massachusetts Due to El Niño
Meteorologists predict a summer of fluctuating weather in Massachusetts, influenced by a strong El Niño and shifting jet streams. Seasonal weather expert Dan Leonard notes that June could bring intense heat as a ridge of high pressure builds in the western U.S., potentially spilling heat into the Northeast. However, the presence of a trough in the East may lead to backdoor cold fronts, creating a mix of hot and cooler periods. The latter half of the summer, particularly August and September, is expected to see a stronger-than-normal jet stream, resulting in more frequent cold fronts, downpours, and severe thunderstorms. El Niño is also likely to suppress Atlantic tropical storm activity, though any storms that do form could pose a heightened risk to New England.
