Coast Guard Rescues Hunters Trapped on Ice Near Chefornak, Alaska
The U.S. Coast Guard successfully rescued four seal hunters who were trapped on an ice floe near Chefornak, Alaska. The hunters had been stranded for over 24 hours after their boat became stuck on the ice. Despite freeing their vessel overnight, they were unable to reach a rescue party from the shore. Fortunately, they had satellite communication equipment, allowing them to coordinate directly with rescuers. The Coast Guard deployed an HC-130 search aircraft and an MH-60 helicopter from Air Station Kodiak, located approximately 370 nautical miles away. The helicopter crew faced challenging weather conditions, including near-zero visibility, blowing snow, and icing, as they navigated mountainous terrain to reach the hunters. The rescue operation was completed successfully, and all four individuals were returned to Chefornak in good health.
