Nauru Ends Diplomatic Recognition of Georgia's Russian-Occupied Regions
Nauru has officially severed its diplomatic ties with the Russian-occupied regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, withdrawing its recognition of these territories as independent states. This decision aligns with previous actions by other Pacific island nations, such as Vanuatu and Tuvalu, which also rescinded recognition in recent years. Georgia's foreign ministry has welcomed Nauru's move, viewing it as a reaffirmation of international law and a step towards establishing diplomatic relations with Nauru. The regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia have been contentious geopolitical points since their separation from Georgia in 2008, with Russia providing military and political support.
