US Army Integrates 50 mm Munition into Medium Range Reconnaissance UAS
The US Army's Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) has equipped its Medium Range Reconnaissance (MRR) unmanned aerial systems (UAS) with the XM1204 50 mm High Explosive Airburst munitions, known as the Scalable Precision Explosive Airdrop Round (SPEAR). This development was demonstrated during Exercise 'African Lion 26'. The munition, weighing less than 5 lbs, is designed for integration with Group 1 and 2 UAS and features a programmable airburst fuze. The first live fire test was conducted in February 2026 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, with the 82nd Airborne Division.
