German-French Fighter Program Ends Amid Industrial Tensions
Germany and France have decided to end their collaboration on the New Generation Fighter, a key component of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), due to unresolved industrial tensions. The decision comes eight years after Airbus and Dassault Aviation initiated the project. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius cited the inability to reach an agreement as the primary reason for the dissolution. The program faced challenges, including differing requirements between the two countries, such as France's need for a carrier-capable fighter and nuclear delivery capabilities, which Germany does not require. Despite the end of the fighter program, other elements of FCAS, like uncrewed aircraft and a combat cloud network, will continue to develop.
