Flood Recovery Efforts Underway in Moloka'i Amid Mold Concerns
In Moloka'i, Hawaii, residents are grappling with the aftermath of severe flooding caused by Kona low storms. The storms brought approximately three feet of mud and water, severely impacting homes in the area. Kau'i Reyes, a long-time resident, experienced significant damage to her property, with floodwaters reaching the top of her stairs and destroying a lower studio room. In addition to the flooding, mold has become a pressing issue, exacerbated by roof leaks. Volunteers from Red Lightning, a community-driven organization, have been actively assisting affected households on Maui and Moloka'i. They are focusing on mold remediation, using specialized equipment to remove mold spores and applying mold retardants to prevent further growth. The organization emphasizes the urgency of addressing mold, as it can grow rapidly and pose health risks if not managed promptly.
