Angel Island Prescribed Burn Resumes This Week
Fire crews are set to resume a prescribed burn on Angel Island, located in the San Francisco Bay, this week. The operation, which began on September 8, 2026, was paused after covering 62 acres due to air quality concerns. The burn aims to reduce wildfire risks by clearing flammable vegetation such as grass and shrubs. State Parks, in collaboration with Cal Fire and the Marin County Fire Department, will oversee the continuation of the burn. Residents may notice smoke rising from the island, visible across the East Bay and San Francisco. The prescribed burn is part of a broader effort funded by Proposition 4 2024 Climate Bond to prevent catastrophic wildfires like the one that burned nearly half the island in 2008.
