Danish Archaeologists Uncover 13th-Century Convent Beneath Soccer Field, Halting Parking Garage Plans
Archaeologists in Roskilde, Denmark, have discovered the well-preserved remnants of St. Clare’s Convent, a 13th-century monastery, located approximately six feet beneath a local soccer field. Using ground-penetrating radar (GPR), researchers confirmed the existence of cloisters, room dividers, a church, and an eastern wing with walls and vaulting pillars. This discovery was made during a subterranean survey conducted in preparation for the construction of an underground parking garage. The convent was demolished in the 16th century during the Protestant Reformation, and historians previously believed little of it remained, leading to a gap in understanding medieval monastic architecture. The clarity of the GPR results surprised archaeologists, with one expert noting them as among the clearest from a monastery complex in Scandinavia. The findings complicate municipal plans, as the soccer field was not protected due to the assumption that no historical remnants existed beneath it.
