Misunderstanding of School Counselors' Roles Impacts Student Outcomes
A report by the American School Counselor Association highlights a widespread misunderstanding of school counselors' roles among policymakers, the public, and some school communities. While students and school staff generally understand counselors' roles, district staff, families, and policymakers often do not. This lack of understanding leads to counselors being assigned tasks outside their expertise, detracting from their primary responsibilities of supporting students' academic, social, and emotional needs. The report, based on a survey of over 6,000 counselors, emphasizes the challenges counselors face, including high caseloads and inappropriate duties.
