Target Recalls Baby Wipes Due to Risk of Life-Threatening Infections in Infants
Target has initiated a voluntary recall of certain Up & Up branded baby wipes following reports of potential bacterial contamination. The recall affects both the Fragrance-Free and Fresh Cucumber Scented varieties, which were found to contain traces of Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioi. These bacteria can cause serious infections, particularly in newborns, infants, and young children, who are more susceptible due to their underdeveloped immune systems. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a notice on June 5, 2026, highlighting the potential for life-threatening infections such as sepsis or pneumonia if the contaminated wipes are used. Customers have reported symptoms including skin and eye irritation, as well as infections, prompting the recall. Target is working with the Turkish manufacturer, Sapro Temizlik Urunleri, to investigate the issue further. Affected consumers are advised to stop using the wipes immediately and return them to any Target store for a full refund.
