Lowy Institute Debates AUKUS Partnership's Impact on Australian Security
The Lowy Institute, an Australian think tank, recently hosted a debate on whether the AUKUS partnership strengthens Australia's security. Jennifer Parker, a Nonresident Fellow at the Lowy Institute and Adjunct Fellow in Naval Studies at the University of Western Australia, argued that AUKUS is vital for Australian security and that the nuclear-powered submarines will be delivered. Conversely, Sam Roggeveen, Program Director of the Lowy Institute’s International Security Program, contended that AUKUS is unachievable and unnecessary. The debate, moderated by Lowy Institute Research Director Mihai Sora, included opening statements from both speakers, a moderated discussion, and an audience Q&A session. This discussion highlights the differing perspectives within Australia regarding the strategic implications and feasibility of the AUKUS agreement.
