South Carolina Beach Homes Face Enforcement Challenges Over Turtle-Safe Lighting Violations
In South Carolina's Waccamaw Neck, beachfront properties are under scrutiny for failing to comply with a long-standing ordinance designed to protect sea turtles during nesting season. The ordinance, in effect from May 1 to October 31, restricts nighttime lighting that can disorient turtles and hatchlings, leading them away from the ocean. Despite repeated warnings, many properties remain non-compliant, prompting Georgetown County officials to issue final notices. Enforcement is challenging as violations are typically visible only at night, and the county lacks overnight staffing to monitor compliance. Conservation advocates, including the S.C. Environmental Law Project, are working to raise awareness and encourage compliance, emphasizing the importance of simple measures like using turtle-safe bulbs and shielding lights.
