Trash Academy Maps Illegal Dumping Sites in Philadelphia to Prompt City Action
Trash Academy, an organization focused on waste reduction and environmental justice, has developed interactive maps to document illegal dumping sites across Philadelphia. The initiative aims to highlight the prevalence of illegal dumping and encourage systemic changes rather than just cleanup efforts. The maps, created with the help of a data scientist and coder, display over 50 sites marked by red dots, each accompanied by descriptions and photos. Residents can report new sites through a form, contributing to a growing inventory of problem areas. The organization seeks to hold the city accountable for its promises to address illegal dumping, emphasizing the need for prevention and education alongside enforcement.
