South Africa's Nuclear Expansion Sparks Global Competition Among Reactor Builders
South Africa is advancing its plans to expand its nuclear power program, setting the stage for a competitive bidding process among global reactor builders. This move comes despite recent safety incidents at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, Africa's only commercial nuclear plant. The expansion aims to add 2,500 megawatts of new nuclear capacity to strengthen energy security and reduce coal dependency. The procurement process is expected to attract bids from major players like Russia's Rosatom, France's EDF, South Korea's KHNP, China's CNNC, and U.S.-based Westinghouse. This development follows a 2017 High Court ruling that deemed a previous procurement process unlawful, prompting a restart under stricter rules.
