Critics, including historian Paula Giddings, expressed disappointment, arguing that the use of a fabricated image undermines Wells' legacy of truth-telling and fighting against false representations. This incident is part of a broader pattern of the Trump administration's use of digitally altered images, which has previously sparked backlash. McMahon's post was part of a series celebrating notable women in American history, but the use of AI-generated images has raised concerns about historical accuracy and the quality of educational resources.
