Study Reveals Brain Changes Linked to Depression in Large-Scale Analysis
Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine conducted a large-scale study analyzing over 23,000 brain scans to investigate changes associated with major depressive disorder. The study, published in Nature Mental Health, identified reductions in gray matter in the frontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, and insula, regions involved in emotion regulation and decision-making. Surprisingly, the study also found smaller brain regions in motor and visual areas linked to depression, challenging previous assumptions. The research aims to enhance understanding of depression's neural underpinnings and guide future diagnostic and treatment strategies.
