A study published in PLOS Biology reveals that the mouse brain undergoes significant remodeling during late adolescence, affecting memory retrieval. Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine discovered that the retrosplenial cortex, a key memory region, experiences changes that temporarily make earlier memories harder to access. This process involves the decline and rebuilding of perineuronal nets, structures that stabilize memory circuits. The study suggests that these changes prioritize adult memories over those formed in early adolescence, aligning with the dynamic brain maturation during this period.
