Ashland, Wisconsin Celebrates Its Identity as 'Historic Mural Capital' with Annual MuralFest
Ashland, Wisconsin, known as the 'Historic Mural Capital of Wisconsin,' is preparing for its annual MuralFest. The city, along with nearby towns, boasts approximately 33 murals, with 21 located within Ashland itself. These large-scale paintings, often depicting local history, are a significant feature of the community's landscape. The first mural, the Asaph Whittlesey mural, was painted on the old Ashland National Bank building in 1998. The creation of these murals has largely been self-funded through community efforts, including individuals purchasing sections of murals or sponsoring the inclusion of family members. Artists, such as Sue Prentice Martinsen and Kelly Meredith, have been instrumental in the project, often working with significant community support.
