New York City Faces Rising E-Bike Safety Concerns Amid Policy Criticism
New York City is grappling with a significant rise in e-bike-related accidents, prompting calls for stronger regulations and enforcement. Since 2019, e-bike crashes have resulted in 133 fatalities and over 17,000 injuries, including more than 1,500 pedestrian injuries. Critics argue that current measures are insufficient, with advocacy groups blocking stricter controls. Mayor Zohran Mamdani's directive in March, which limited NYPD enforcement on e-bike violations, has been particularly contentious. Speaker Julie Menin is advocating for tighter local laws, while the state legislature is urged to implement e-bike registration and licensing requirements.
