Study Links South Asian Monsoon to Hemispheric Climate Drivers
A global team of scientists has resolved a long-standing paradox in the South Asian summer monsoon system, which delivers rainfall across the Indian subcontinent and drives upwelling in the Arabian Sea. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that monsoon rainfall and ocean upwelling are influenced by different hemispheric solar forcing mechanisms. Northern Hemisphere insolation strengthens monsoon rainfall, while Southern Hemisphere warming, particularly over Southern Africa, weakens Arabian Sea upwelling through atmospheric teleconnections. The research combined geological records from caves and marine sediments with climate simulations spanning 150,000 years, providing insights into the complex dynamics of the monsoon system and its global connections.
