New Research Challenges Reliability of fMRI Brain Activity Interpretation in Neuroscience
A recent study has raised significant questions regarding the foundational assumptions of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a widely used technique to measure brain activity. Traditionally, fMRI infers neural activity by tracking changes in blood oxygenation, assuming that increased oxygen flow correlates with increased neuronal activation. However, this new research, published in Nature Neuroscience, suggests that this correlation is not always reliable. The study found that in approximately 40% of cases across the cortex, blood oxygenation changes either do not correlate or even move in the opposite direction of actual metabolic activity, which is a more direct measure of neural work.
