U.S. Mint's Special Mint Sets from 1965-1967 Highlight Unique Production Period
During the years 1965, 1966, and 1967, the United States Mint did not produce its annual U.S. Mint or Proof Sets. Instead, it issued a trio of 'Special Mint Sets' specifically for coin collectors. This change in production was due to a transition period where the U.S. Mint stopped making Proof Sets at the Philadelphia Mint in 1964 and moved production to the San Francisco Mint. It took three years for the San Francisco Mint to become fully operational for regular Proof Set production. During this interim, the Mint created special finish coins for each denomination—cent, nickel, dime, quarter, and half dollar—and packaged them in unique U.S. Mint packaging. Many collectors consider these sets to be the origin of the 'Satin Finish Sets' due to their distinctive appearance.
