Lambda Legal Advocates for New LGBTQ+ Bill of Rights Amid Rising Challenges
Lambda Legal has announced a campaign for a new LGBTQ+ Bill of Rights, responding to a surge in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation across the United States. Since 2022, over 2,446 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced in state legislatures, with 255 becoming law in 27 states. The organization aims to build on the historical 1968 Homosexual Bill of Rights, which sought decriminalization of consensual sex, non-discrimination in military service, and employment equity. Lambda Legal's new demands include access to quality healthcare, inclusive education, economic participation, and a culture of belonging for LGBTQ+ individuals. The initiative comes as the community faces challenges such as bans on gender-affirming care and censorship in public schools.
