Lesotho Emerges as Unlikely Ski Destination Amidst African Tourism Growth
Lesotho, a small landlocked kingdom surrounded by South Africa, is gaining recognition as a unique ski destination. The Afriski Mountain Resort, located in the Maluti Mountains, is the only operational ski resort in sub-Saharan Africa. It attracts thousands of visitors each winter, primarily from South Africa, due to its high elevation and use of artificial snow machines. The resort has become a significant contributor to Lesotho's economy, providing employment and boosting tourism. Visitors are drawn to the novelty of skiing in Africa, with many experiencing their first ski lessons at Afriski.
