Congressman John Garamendi's Former Legislative Fellow Highlights Environmental Concerns in Coastal Georgia
Jeff Beauvais, North Coast Advocate for the nonprofit One Hundred Miles, previously served as a legislative fellow in the office of Congressman John Garamendi. Beauvais, who grew up in coastal Georgia, is now focused on safeguarding the region's environment. His organization, One Hundred Miles, works to protect Georgia's coast by addressing issues such as water and wetlands, land use, climate change, community resilience and equity, and wildlife. Beauvais has identified data centers and unchecked warehouse development as significant environmental challenges for the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry. He notes that data centers consume vast amounts of water and electricity, and generate noise and air pollution, while warehouse construction has outpaced demand, leading to the paving over of wetlands crucial for stormwater management. Residents in Chatham and Effingham counties are expressing frustration over the conversion of green spaces into concrete.
