University of Iceland and Hólar University to Merge Under New Legislation
The University of Iceland and Hólar University are set to merge on July 1, following the approval of new legislation by Iceland's parliament. This merger will form the University of Iceland University Complex, a move aimed at improving efficiency and enhancing the quality of higher education. The merger is part of broader reforms initiated in 2023 by former Higher Education Minister Áslaug Arna Sigurbjörnsdóttir. Hólar University, known for its programs in aquaculture, equine science, and tourism studies, will maintain some independence but undergo organizational changes, including the replacement of its rector with a president of the University of Iceland at Hólar.
