CDC to Evacuate 17 Americans from Hantavirus-Affected Cruise Ship to Nebraska Quarantine
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is preparing to evacuate 17 American passengers from the MV Hondius, a cruise ship affected by a hantavirus outbreak, to a quarantine facility in Nebraska. The ship, which will not dock at the Canary Islands, will remain offshore as health teams evacuate passengers and crew to their respective countries. The U.S. Department of State is organizing a medical repatriation flight to transport the Americans to the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The hantavirus, particularly the Andes strain, has a high mortality rate and is primarily spread through rodent droppings. The outbreak has resulted in three deaths and several infections. The CDC has not specified the duration of the quarantine for the evacuated passengers.
