Jewish Parachutists' Missions in Nazi-Occupied Europe Highlighted in New Book
A new book by Matti Friedman, titled 'Out of the Sky: Heroism and Rebirth in Nazi Europe,' explores the daring missions of Jewish parachutists during World War II. In 1944, 37 young Jewish men and women, who had escaped to Mandatory Palestine, were recruited to parachute into Nazi-occupied Europe. Their mission, orchestrated by British MI9 officers and Zionist leaders, aimed to assist Jewish communities and gather intelligence. Among the parachutists was Hannah Szenes, who became a symbol of heroism after being executed by a pro-Nazi Hungarian firing squad. The book delves into the complex motivations behind the missions, the challenges faced by the parachutists, and their ultimate impact on Jewish history.
