California Lawmakers Urge FCC to Halt AT Landline Shutdown Amid Safety Concerns
A bipartisan group of California lawmakers, including U.S. Senator Adam Schiff and Representatives Doris Matsui, Jimmy Panetta, and Mike Thompson, have called on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to prevent AT&T from discontinuing landline services in California. This action follows a federal court's decision to reject AT&T's request to block California from enforcing its Carrier of Last Resort requirements. The lawmakers argue that AT&T's plan to replace landlines with wireless services could leave approximately 200,000 residents and businesses without reliable communication during emergencies, such as wildfires and earthquakes. They emphasize the importance of maintaining landline services to ensure public safety and reliable emergency communications, especially in areas with unreliable cellular coverage.
