Ukrainian Forces Regain More Territory Despite Record Russian Attacks in May
In May 2026, Ukrainian forces managed to regain more territory than Russian forces captured, marking a significant shift in the ongoing conflict. According to sources within Ukraine's Defense Forces, Russian troops captured approximately 130 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, a decrease from the 150-160 square kilometers captured in April. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces restored control over or eliminated Russian footholds across roughly 250 square kilometers, resulting in a net territorial gain of about 120 square kilometers for Ukraine. This development occurred despite a record number of Russian combat engagements, with 7,008 recorded in May, a 37% increase from April. Ukrainian advances included operations in the Zaporizhzhia region and the liberation of the village of Odradne in the Kharkiv region. The Ukrainian military's efforts were part of a broader strategy to reduce Russia's offensive capabilities through targeted strikes.
