Bourbon Virus Confirmed in New York: A New Tick-Borne Threat Emerges
For the first time, Bourbon virus has been confirmed in New York, with a case identified in a 67-year-old Suffolk County man. The virus, carried by lone star ticks, has previously been confirmed only six times in the U.S. The disease is difficult to diagnose due to the lack of commercial tests and its symptoms overlap with other tick-borne illnesses. Testing of ticks and deer in New York has shown that the virus is more prevalent than previously thought, with evidence of active transmission in Suffolk County and other parts of the state.
