Berlin Wall Foundation Uncovers East German Border Crossing Remnants at Checkpoint Charlie
During recent excavations at Berlin's Checkpoint Charlie site, the Berlin Wall Foundation has discovered remnants of the former East German border crossing. The findings include sections of boundary walls, asphalt surfaces, and the foundation of a command post utilized by East German border troops between 1985 and 1989. Additionally, parts of a vehicle barrier, originally erected after a significant tank stand-off in October 1961, were unearthed. These discoveries are considered 'significant historical testimonies' by Susanne Muhle of the Berlin Wall Foundation, especially given the extensive alterations made to the site since German reunification in 1990. The excavations were conducted on a plot designated for a new education and memorial site.
