California's Beloved Bald Eagle Jackie Dies After Illness, Highlighting Species' Recovery
Jackie, a well-known bald eagle in California, has died following an illness, weeks after being attacked by other eagles. Jackie became an internet sensation as nature enthusiasts watched her and her partner, Shadow, via a live camera feed installed by the Friends of Big Bear Valley. The camera documented their nesting activities near Big Bear Lake. Despite medical treatment, including a blood transfusion and oxygen therapy, Jackie succumbed to her illness. Her death is a poignant reminder of the bald eagle's recovery from near extinction, following the banning of the pesticide DDT in the 1970s.
