EF-1 Tornado Causes Widespread Damage in Homewood and Flossmoor
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Chicago confirmed that a storm system on August 11, 2026, produced five tornadoes across the region, including an EF-1 tornado that caused significant damage in Homewood and Flossmoor. This tornado originated in Orland Park and traveled through several areas, including Country Club Hills, Flossmoor, Homewood, Glenwood, Lansing, and Munster, Indiana, before dissipating. The tornado spanned 22 miles with a width of 300 yards. Other tornadoes included an EF-2 storm with peak winds of 115 mph from Monee to St. John, Indiana, and additional EF-1 and EF-0 tornadoes in Wilmington, Mokena, Tinley Park, and Oswego. The storm also brought straight-line winds nearing 100 mph, causing widespread power outages across southern Cook County, eastern Will County, and parts of Indiana. As of August 12, thousands of customers remained without power, with utility crews working to restore services.
