Brazil Identifies Fish-Killing Pathogens, Urges Enhanced Aquaculture Surveillance
Researchers in Brazil have identified pathogens responsible for columnaris disease in fish, marking the first time these have been found in the country. The disease, caused by Flavobacterium bacteria, affects the skin and gills of fish, leading to high mortality rates, especially in young fish. The pathogens were discovered in Nile tilapia and native Brazilian fish species, indicating a broader host range than previously recognized. The findings highlight the need for improved disease surveillance and the development of vaccines tailored to the strains present in Brazilian aquaculture. The research underscores the importance of robust hygiene and disinfection protocols to prevent the spread of these pathogens.
