Russian Military Presence in Mali Faces Scrutiny Amid Security Challenges
The Russian military's involvement in Mali is under scrutiny following recent attacks by armed groups on Malian Armed Forces' bases. The Africa Corps, a unit of the Russian Defence Ministry, replaced the private Wagner Group and has been providing support to Mali since French forces withdrew in 2022. Despite this, the security situation remains volatile, with recent coordinated attacks by separatist and al-Qaeda-linked groups resulting in the seizure of key locations, including the northern city of Kidal. The attacks have raised questions about the effectiveness of the Russian military partnership, as Russian forces reportedly withdrew from Kidal after negotiations. The Malian government, led by military ruler Assimi Goita, claims the situation is under control with Russian air support, but the loss of Defence Minister Sadio Camara in the attacks has dealt a significant blow to the campaign.
