Study Reveals Brain Remodeling During Adolescence Affects Memory Retrieval
Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine have discovered a significant biological process in mice that sheds light on how memory circuits mature during late adolescence. The study, published in PLOS Biology, focused on the retrosplenial cortex (RSP), a key memory region in the brain. It found that protective structures known as perineuronal nets, which stabilize memory circuits, diminish during late adolescence before rebuilding in adulthood. This temporary weakening of the stabilizing system causes memories formed earlier in life to become more difficult to retrieve, although they resurface later with less precision. The research highlights a period of brain remodeling that corresponds with continued brain maturation into the mid-to-late 20s, as recognized by the National Institutes of Health.
