New York City Proposes 130-Unit Affordable Housing Project in Lower East Side
The New York City Department of Planning is considering a proposal to construct a 21-story building containing 130 affordable housing units in the Lower East Side. The project aims to replace the two-story annex of St. Augustine’s Chapel at 290 Henry Street. The new development will include income-restricted units for families at 50%, 80%, and 110% of the area median income, with 15% of the units reserved for formerly homeless individuals. The proposal also includes retail space and community facilities for St. Augustine’s Church. Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal supports the project, emphasizing the importance of innovative housing solutions amid the current housing crisis.
