Hasiba Nawaz Advocates for Apprenticeships and Diversity in Engineering at Smart Manufacturing Week
Hasiba Nawaz, a Junior Systems Development Engineer at Balmoral Tanks, shared her insights at Smart Manufacturing Week, emphasizing the value of apprenticeships in engineering education. Nawaz, who works on developing automated configurators for design engineers, highlighted her preference for apprenticeships over traditional university education. She believes that apprenticeships offer a practical, hands-on learning approach that allows learners to apply knowledge immediately while developing transferable skills such as communication and teamwork. Nawaz also discussed the importance of a growth mindset, where failure is seen as a key part of the learning process. Additionally, she addressed the concept of reverse mentoring, where younger employees can contribute to improving systems like onboarding and training materials. Nawaz stressed the need for greater diversity in engineering, particularly encouraging more women to enter the sector.
