Suicide Prevention Nonprofits Merge to Form Largest Organization in the U.S.
Two major suicide prevention nonprofits, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and The Jed Foundation (JED), have announced plans to merge, creating the largest suicide prevention organization in the United States. The merger, expected to finalize in the fall pending regulatory approval, will result in a combined annual operating budget of approximately $75 million and net assets of around $140 million. AFSP, founded in 1987, is the largest private funder of suicide research, while JED, established in 2000, focuses on mental health promotion among students and young adults. The merger aims to enhance coordination of a national prevention strategy, leveraging both organizations' strengths to advance research, policy change, and comprehensive suicide prevention efforts.
