Rare Books Worth $3 Million Stolen Decades Ago Resurface in Manhattan
Seventeen rare books, valued at approximately $3 million, have resurfaced in Manhattan after being stolen from the Long Island estate of John Hay Whitney between 1982 and 1989. The books, which include a collection of love letters by poet John Keats, were discovered when a young man attempted to sell them to rare book dealers. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office, led by Alvin Bragg, secured a search warrant to seize the books after being contacted by the dealers. The books will be returned to the Whitney family, who plan to auction them and donate the proceeds. The investigation into the theft and the whereabouts of the remaining 11 missing books is ongoing.
