Scientists Uncover Systemic Body Changes After Three Days of Fasting
A study involving 12 healthy volunteers, conducted by scientists from the Precision Healthcare University Research Institute at Queen Mary University of London and the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, has revealed significant systemic changes in the human body after approximately three days of complete calorie restriction. Participants underwent a seven-day water-only fast, with researchers monitoring blood markers daily. The study, published in Nature Metabolism in 2024, found that after about three days, pronounced changes occurred in the levels of proteins associated with various organs, with roughly one in three measured proteins showing significant alteration. These effects were linked to all major organs and could not be solely attributed to weight loss. During the initial two to three days, the body transitioned from using glucose to fat stores for energy. Participants lost an average of 5.7 kilograms, comprising both fat and lean mass. After refeeding, most lost lean mass recovered, while the re...
