Fall Bridge Lifts Begin Wednesday in Chicago
The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) has announced the start of its fall bridge lift schedule along the Chicago River, beginning Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. These lifts, which occur every fall and spring, allow sailboats and other recreational vessels to travel between Lake Michigan and their winter storage facilities. The process involves lifting bridges in succession from DuSable Lake Shore Drive to the 18th Street Bridge, with each lift taking approximately 8 to 12 minutes. The schedule includes lifts on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with some exceptions due to ongoing rehabilitation work on the 110-year-old Lake Street Bridge. The bridge lifts are expected to continue through mid-November, with the final lift scheduled for Saturday, November 14, 2026.
