Academic Study Highlights Rhetorical Control Over Vocabulary as Key to Writing Quality
A recent academic study, 'Relations of Linguistic Features, Rhetorical Moves, and Writing Quality in Academic Writing of Secondary Students,' has found that rhetorical features are the most significant predictor of writing quality, rather than lexical sophistication alone. The study, which analyzed 410 argumentative essays from linguistically diverse secondary students, concluded that while advanced vocabulary often accompanies strong writing, it does not independently predict a high human-judged score. Instead, the ability to establish a claim, select relevant evidence, explain its significance, and guide the reader towards a conclusion—collectively known as rhetorical control—is paramount. The research suggests that an impressive term only becomes meaningful when it advances the text's purpose.
