Missouri Charter Public School Commission Returns $685,000 in Surplus Funds to Sponsored Schools
The Missouri Charter Public School Commission, the state's largest charter-school sponsor, has approved the return of $685,000 in surplus funds to the schools it oversees. This marks the third time in recent years the commission has rebated a portion of its surplus. Individual schools are set to receive between $10,000 and $70,000, with the amount based on school size and performance. For instance, Brookside Charter School in Kansas City is receiving $55,000, while Scuola Vita Nuova Charter School in northeast Kansas City will receive $70,000. The commission's executive director, Mark Modrcin, stated that the agency's lean and efficient operations have allowed it to build a healthy reserve, which they believe should be reinvested in the schools. In addition to the direct rebates, the commission also voted to allocate nearly $95,000 to a grant program, to be administered by a third-party contractor, aimed at funding ideas that promote better academic performance.
