President Trump's DOJ Threatens Aid Cuts to States Not Reporting Undocumented Immigrants
The U.S. Justice Department has issued a warning that states risk losing billions of dollars in welfare funding if they fail to report all immigrants known to state agencies who are in the country illegally to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This directive, outlined in a legal opinion released by the DOJ’s Office of Legal Counsel, marks a significant shift in policy. Previously, only state agencies directly administering specific welfare programs were required to report such individuals. The new interpretation mandates that all state agencies, including universities and departments of motor vehicles, must comply. Deputy Assistant Attorney General Joshua Craddock, who signed the opinion, stated that non-compliance could lead to severe consequences, including the loss of program funding. This move is part of President Trump's broader immigration crackdown, which has involved increased enforcement and efforts to compel state and local cooperation.
