New York Shipyard Explosion Kills One, Injures Over 30 Firefighters
Investigators are examining a shipyard in the Mariners Harbor neighborhood of Staten Island, New York, following a fire and explosion that resulted in one civilian death and injuries to more than 30 firefighters and first responders. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when firefighters responded to reports of a fire, heavy smoke, and two workers trapped in a basement. An explosion occurred less than an hour later, causing significant injuries. A fire marshal and a firefighter sustained serious injuries, while 29 firefighters and four emergency medical personnel suffered minor to moderate injuries. The fire marshal, Christopher Cuccaro, is in critical but stable condition with a fractured skull and brain bleed. The explosion took place in a large metal structure at the shipyard, which was once owned by Bethlehem Steel Company.
