Tropical Storm Bertha Makes Landfall in Louisiana, Brings Flooding Threat
Tropical Storm Bertha made landfall in southern Louisiana on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, bringing strong winds, heavy rainfall, and the potential for storm surges along the U.S. Gulf Coast (Times of India, 2026). The storm hit St. Bernard Parish, located approximately 40 miles east of New Orleans, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (72 km/h). Tropical storm-force winds extended nearly 100 miles (160 km) from the storm's center. This is the second named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, following Tropical Storm Arthur in June. Coastal areas in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, including New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain, are under tropical storm warnings. The National Hurricane Center has also reported that this is the first such weather event in the region in at least two decades.
