Scientists Measure Antineutrinos from Spent Nuclear Fuel, Confirming Emissions Post-Shutdown
Researchers from the Double Chooz collaboration have successfully measured antineutrino emissions from spent nuclear fuel, confirming that these emissions persist even after a nuclear reactor is shut down. The study, led by Anthony Onillon and Thierry Lasserre from the Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, was conducted at the Chooz nuclear power plant in France. The Double Chooz detector, located 400 meters from the reactor cores, recorded around 100 antineutrino events over 17.2 days while the reactors were shut down. This marks the first direct experimental validation of antineutrino emissions from shutdown reactors, providing a new method for reactor monitoring and nuclear safety.
